Vegetable Gardening
"Reap What You Sow"

Continued from the previous page

  • Start your vegetable gardening plans by selecting the different varieties of plants that you want to grow. Determine what is the appropriate planting time for your specific plants in your area.

  • Determine the correct spacing for your plant and layout a plan on paper that you can follow.

  • Take note if special fencing is needed to keep animals out. A tall fence with tight mesh to keep deer, dogs, rabbits and other animals out is recommended for successful vegetable gardening in most areas.

  • Organic garden fertilizer, home composting and natural insect repellents are the perfect thing to add to your garden. Organic gardening products are friendly to the earth and you can rest assured that there in nothing toxic on or around your produce.

Early settlers were able to garden without chemical pesticides and your garden will do great without them as well.

You can add natural insects to your garden. Insects like ladybugs. They do a nice job taking care of pests without the use of chemicals.

  • One of the requirements is to weed the garden. Weeds can easily choke growing plants and ruin your growing efforts. Everyone can take a turn when weeding is necessary.

Regular weeding is part of bringing your vegetables to harvest. Weeding is not the most fun part of gardening but if everybody participates, it’s certainly manageable. This is much easier with a tiller if you have one available.

  • When you reap some of your harvest, freeze, can or give away extra fruits or vegetables. If you do some canning, you will have plenty of your produce for months after the season ends.

Friends and neighbor may become very interested in vegetable gardening if they get a taste of your harvest. So share your bounty! Your friends and neighbors will be grateful.

  • Take a daily trip to the garden with your kids and watch it grow. They can see the fruits of their labor as the seedlings push through the soil and develop into mature plants. Your kids can see the beauty of nature at work as a beginner gardening lesson.
