One of our tips for going green involves making homemade cleaning products. If you don't want to make them, there are eco-friendly products that are available at the store.

There are many companies going green by making eco-friendly products. But you can enjoy living frugal and make your own right at home.

These homemade cleaners are made from fairly common ingredients that you probably have around the house.

You’ll need to buy a couple spray and non-spray bottles. You can prepare the solutions in the bottles. When you have used all of the cleaning solution just reuse the same bottle. This, of course, equals less trash and means your going green at home!

Water will be the base ingredient that you start with. Water doesn’t stain permanently and is, for the most part, safe for all surfaces. Other substances can be added to the water to make your cleaning mixture.

White Vinegar

One of our tips for going green is to use white vinegar mixed with water. White Vinegar is mildly acidic and dissolves soap scum, hard water deposits and dirt from surfaces. It is not harsh, yet kills mold, germs and bacteria. It's environmentally friendly and very economical.

For general purpose surface cleaning mix 1/2 cup white vinegar to 1 cup to 1 quart water in your spray bottle depending on the strength that works best for you. Go with full strength on tough stains like found around the toilet rim and bowl. The vinegar may smell funny but at least you are enjoying the benefits of going green.

For hardwood floors use 1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon on water. Be careful not to use excessive water on the wood floor. For vinyl floors go with 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water.

The same mixture can be used to clean your windows to a streak-free shine. Use newspaper instead of paper towels to wipe the windows.

You're doing another good thing for the environment by not using paper towels. When the newspaper dries out, recycle it.

Have a clogged drain? Trying vinegar together with backing soda to remove the clog. Pour some baking soda down the drain and follow it with vinegar.

This combination goes to work right away on stubborn clogs. Wait 15 minutes and flush with hot water and repeat if necessary.

Baking Soda

Baking soda works great in your garbage disposal to neutralize odors. Another idea if you have an odor in the garbage disposal is to put some ground up citrus rinds down the drain and let them sit for several hours to take care of the problem.

Carpet odors can be removed by shaking baking soda on your carpet before vacuuming.

If you don't do your own house cleaning, then employ a cleaning company that only uses eco-friendly, "green" cleaning products. They are safer and better for everyone and are becoming readily available for your cleaning people to use.

Safety

An important tip about safety: Keep any cleaning products, no matter how eco-friendly, out of reach of children. They are best stored in a locked cabinet. Take all precautions and avoid any accidents.
