Harnessing Solar Power Will Cut
Payments To Electric Companies

Utilize The Energy

Solar power energy is something that we have been trying to harness for many years. And now more than ever, it makes sense to develop alternative energy to help break our dependence on dwindling fossil fuels.

Residential solar power installations have become more popular with rising energy prices driving our home utility costs up. Would you choose to invest in a solar system now that we can capture solar power energy with more advanced equipment? Maybe you would once you know more of the facts about solar energy.

Home solar power systems can either be for heating water for hot water usage or they can generate electrical power. We focus on the electrical systems here.

Initial Costs

The problem is, dealing with the initial cost to get a solar power energy system up and running. Residential solar power installations will begin to pay themselves off once they are operational and have about a 10-year payback.

While the cost to produce the panels in dropping with the advent of new technology, it’s still relatively expensive compared to traditional energy sources. Meaning, the cost per watt produced is still relatively high compared to conventional energy sources. But there are a lot of factors to consider.

How much solar power energy you will need to partially power your home will depend largely upon your consumption. Many families learn to live very comfortably on less energy in order to control usage. Other factors include the location of your home in the country and how large of a system you need to meet the demand.

Varying Requirements

Some people want to do away with their electric bill altogether. In that case the system would need to be fairly extensive in order to avoid power needs from the utility company.

This is not a feasible proposal at this time because the cost to produce electricity using solar panels is greater then the cost of the power from the electric company.

Solar power energy is looked at as a supplement to conventional electricity by most.

Solar kits are the most economical way to put together a system and generally cost anywhere from $8,000 to over $20,000. This includes the necessary equipment and the cost of having the site prepared and inspected if the panels are to be mounted at ground level. Labor has been included if solar panels are to be mounted on the roof.

The services of a licensed electrician are required to wire the system into the homes electrical panel as well.

An extensive Photovoltaic systems installed by a company is going to range between $15,000. and $50,000 depending on how elaborate your system is.

The federal and state governments are behind citizens that choose to save energy through a number of ways including solar.

You can look into the energy tax credit and grants from the government that are available to those that make a residential solar power installation. See the governments tax credit information at our Energy Tax Credits page.

Do it Yourself

For people that are handy and like do it yourself projects, you can build your own DIY solar power system. There are packages out there that provide you with all of the plans and blueprints to build the system. They even suggest where to get additional parts at the hardware store or online.

There is a lot of planning required with the do it yourself kits and if you are not sufficiently skilled it can become a very involved project and maybe more than what you bargained for. The benefit of buying a kit is obviously to reduce your cost for a homemade solar power system.

Bottom Line

Only you can decide if you want to invest in a home solar power system. You need to determine if such a system makes economic sense for your home and the area of the country you're located in. Keep in mind that the power supply is intermittent with the sun only being available part of the time. This, of course, is factored into the average daylight calculations for your area.

Solar power energy is a great way to supplement your electric demand and in fact, saves you money in the long run but there are many considerations that you need to ponder before you dive in headfirst.
