You Can Save on Groceries As
Stores Compete For Your Dollars

Review Your Receipt

Reviewing your grocery receipt regularly can help you save on groceries. Look at the impulse buys, convenience food and high priced items. Next, equate the value you received for the price. Do certain prices jump out at you? You may have second thoughts about buying those items the next time you go shopping if you really want to save money on groceries.

It's amazing how much you spend on certain grocery items. Your expenditures become crystal clear when you are looking at them in black and white on the printed receipt. Try to do this each time you shop and it will help you adjust what you purchase.

Make a List

Make a grocery shopping list before you go. Jot down what you think is required to make meals for several days of the week. You can use many of the sale items for your menu and look for unadvertised specials when at the store.

The list will help you stay focused on a grocery budget and get you out of the store faster. Follow your list and you won’t buy a lot of unnecessary items. Having a list also prevents guessing. You won’t end up with duplicates of things you already have.

Keep your list on an envelope and put your grocery coupons in the envelope as you collect them.

Shop The Competition

One of our strategies to save money is to shop at more then one store. Sure it takes extra time and gas but you may find that it is well worth the extra effort. Stores have weekly fliers showing some of their sale items. Our money saving advice is to save on groceries by primarily purchasing the items that are on sale.

If time permits go to the other stores in your area and take advantage of their sale items. But if time doesn't permit you to go to the other stores, frequently the store you are at will match the competitors prices shown in the flier.

Unadvertised Specials

Check out unadvertised sales in the store. This is one of the easiest ways to save money with low prices. Sometimes they have “Managers Specials” for that store only. It is a good idea to stock up on sale items if you use them a often. Canned goods, pasta and grains have long shelf lives and meats freeze well for many months. So why not find the bargains and stock up on all of your favorites?

Shop Alone

Shop by yourself. This will allow you to concentrate on getting the best value on what your family needs. You will not be distracted by your kids tossing stuff into the cart that you had not planned on buying.

If you do take young children along and they insist on impulse items which end up in the cart, turn them back over to the cashier when checking out and your kids probably won't notice.

Hungry in The Store

We have all learned this one through personal experience! Not a good idea, especially if we expect to save on groceries! Try to eat something before you head to the store.

Everything looks good in the store when you're starving. You might also want to avoid going if you’re tired, in a bad mood or under a time crunch. This is one of the grocery saving tips that we recommend highly.
