Basically, building rich soil is the process of using plant matter and other materials to enrich the soil with this natural garden fertilizer. Compost improves the physical condition and fertility of the soil. You let organic waste decompose and mix it in with the soil as nourishment for whatever you are growing.

The Bin is Optional

In order to begin you'll need to find a place to set-up your pile or container. You can buy bins or even make your own if you like. If you have an inconspicuous place in the back yard, you don’t even need a bin.

Just make a pile and it will decompose just fine. Once you’ve chosen the location and for your storage unit, it’s time to begin making your mixture.

Some of the items that you want to combine together is the compost pile include: wood chips, straw, hay, leaves, grass clippings, weeds (low in seeds), manure, sawdust, corn husks, wood ashes, shrub clippings, shredded newspaper and many kinds of plant refuse from the garden.

From what your family consumes you can contribute fruit peels and rinds, vegetable leftovers, and even coffee or tea grounds make great compost. Don't put meat, fat or bones on the pile.

Oddly enough, food scraps accounts for a large part of the waste that we put in the trash. Instead of putting our scraps in the trash and sending them to the landfill, why not put them in a pile to decompose? Just another one of the benefits of recycling!

Have A Green Thumb

Breakdown will naturally occur as long as the mixture has a moderate amount of moisture, naturally occurring bacteria, along with insects and worms to get the job done. When moisture and air are not present, you will begin to get a foul odor.

Regularly turn the pile over with a gardening tool so that all of it gets air and moisture. Air and moisture incorporation into the compost pile is crucial.

When the compost is ready, it will not be recognizable anymore. It will look like dark brown peat moss and be a great natural garden fertilizer. It is now ready to use. So, what do you think?
