Keep More Cash In Your
Pocket With Grocery Saving Tips

Carts

One of our grocery saving tips is, don’t use a grocery cart if you don’t need a cart. That big ole’ grocery cart is just begging to have a bunch of groceries thrown into it.

Opt for the hand basket or a small grocery cart instead. Better yet, use no cart at all if you can. If you can’t carry it you can’t buy it. This, of course, is not very practical but you get the idea.

Store Brands

Grocery store brands are often good quality brands in most cases. The grocery store is simply having a reputable company place the store label on the products they feature as their own.

If you are hesitant about the quality then buy a small amount and give it a try to see what you think. The quality is not always comparable but more often then not it is. Find the store brands you like and save each time you shop especially if you use free grocery coupons.

Junk Food

This is not an easy one because a lot of people enjoy junk food. But one of our strategies to save money is to avoid snack foods. They have very little nutritional value and are expensive per pound, not to mention high calorie content. Also avoid highly processed foods in flashy packaging.

For the same price of the “junk food,” you can buy apples, bananas, oranges, carrots and many other healthier items.

Grocery Shelves

When you are in an isle and looking at the shelf for a product, look to the top shelf and then to the bottom shelf. Your best values are often located up high or down low. This requires a little more bending and reaching but will be worth the exercise and will save money on groceries.

Also look at the ends of the isles for bargains. Sometimes bargains are on the ends but be aware that the store frequently mixes in bargains with high priced or impulse items.

Farmers Market

Finding a farmer’s market to go to is another one of our grocery saving tips. You'll do best if you buy fruits and vegetables when they're in season.

The produce is usually a lot fresher from local sources then at the grocery store and costs less. Getting better produce at cheaper prices is one of the easiest ways to save money. Most of this produce is locally grown so you will be Going Green at the same time!

Buying in Bulk

Buying in bulk almost invariably saves more. For instance a whole bag of potatoes is far cheaper per pound then buying individual potatoes.

If there is a great sale, stock up on the sale item. Grocery stores have some items that you can buy in bulk but your warehouse stores are going to be better for this.

Buy Family Size

Buy family packs of meat. These are priced far less and can be separated into smaller quantities and frozen. Another one of our grocery saving tips is to do some of the work on chicken your self, like cutting it up and removing the skin if that's to your liking.

Look for other items sold in family size. Make sure to check the unit pricing, because larges quantities does not always mean a lower price.

Again, warehouse clubs have some great pricing on large packages on meat. And their price per pound is usually unbeatable except for when grocery stores have sales. Follow this advice and use our other creative ways to save money and you will be handing less money over to the cashier.
