Will Debt Consolidation
Agencies Benefit You?

Mediator

Are you considering different debt consolidation agencies? Are you hoping that they will have the answers on how you can get out of debt?

For a price…there are many companies out there that will be glad to help you.

But do you really need to have a companies mediator step in a do the work for you? Many of the things they claim to do, you can do yourself. So, how do you know you need their assistance?

Advertisers for debt companies would love for you to believe that their clients (the debt consolidation agencies) are experts when it comes to personal debt problems. The ads promise a world of solutions for any kind of financial problem.

It's true that they have experience helping people regularly with these kinds of issues, but that doesn't mean you absolutely need their help. After all, you may already have some creative ways to save money in mind and know that you can probably handle this situation yourself if you put your mind to it.

Do You Really Need an Agency?

What is the total amount of your debt?

People that have debt of less than $10,000 can go directly to the creditors and negotiate payment options. You have the right to negotiate the interest rate that is being charged on your credit cards as a consumer.

How is my credit score affected?

This is certainly a concern since the reason you're dealing with your debt situation is to avoid a lowering of your credit score.

If the debt consolidation company reports to the creditor that you are in a consumer debt consolidation program, it may have a negative affect on your credit score.

What are the bare minimum of fees?

You are trying to lower your outflow of cash. Many of these companies charge for their services and their fees are based on the scope of the work they're doing for you.

They can provide some basic review and counseling and then make some recommendations as to how you can help yourself without enrolling you in a program.

Can you tighten your budget and save more money?

Debt consolidation programs are packages of negotiated agreements between consumers and creditors.

Payment arrangements are reached that are beneficial for both parties. If you can squeeze a little more money out of your budget and know what you are willing to pay each month, the services of a these debt consolidation agencies may NOT be necessary. This may work better with your strategies to save money.

Consider expenses that you can cut out and what kind of a payment you can live with.

Would it be good for you to get financial counseling?

You may realize that you have difficulty getting your finances under control. One of the first steps to correcting the problem is to get some counseling.

A little guidance with your spending habits can lead to a positive financial future. We highly recommend that you consider counseling if you have gone to the extent of debt consolidation.

Considering debt consolidation without counseling will not prevent the same financial problem from occurring in the future. We recommend that you get some counseling to better handle your debt and credit usage.

What are your other options?

Speak with the people where you do your banking. They may provide you with a better interest rate since you're a customer. They may have a consumer loan that fits better into your budget and will allow you to pay off those higher interest rate credit cards.

Make certain that if you do set up a new consumer loan, that the new loan is unsecured. In other words, do not secure the new loan with your home or car. A secured debt would not be in your best interest. If you cannot make payments as agreed then the creditor can come after your car or home to payoff the secured loan.

Check into free debt consolidation services. There are some non profit debt reduction organizations available that my be able to save you some money and get your financial life back to a more manageable state.

Debt consolidation agencies are not the only choice to straighten out credit card debt situations. Before entering into any program, determine if it is the right solutions for you compared to your other available options.
